Press Release - Alton Herald - September 2008
Pirates ahoy!
There was a surprise in store for anyone who came along to Alton Operatic and Dramatic Society's
themed Open Evening for "The Pirates of Penzance". To get everyone in the swashbuckling mood,
AODS member Huon Mackley and his Dad gave a thrilling display of sword fencing. Others were invited
to have a go and had great fun tackling Huon themselves.
Huon is currently ranked number ten in the UK in the under fifteen age group. His passion is
choreographing fight scenes with his friends and his Dad, and there are plans to make full use
of his stage-fighting skills in the show.
More pirates are urgently needed for this riotous Gilbert and Sullivan comedy. So if you fancy
being Alton's answer to Johnny Depp or just enjoy having fun on stage, why not come along and
give it a go! "The Pirates of Penzance" is wonderfully funny and has some of the best and well-loved
tunes Sullivan ever wrote, including "When the foeman bares his steel" and "I am the very model
of a modern Major-General".
Co-Musical Director/Producer Anne Bradley was delighted with the enthusiasm shown by everyone at
the Open Evening. "If the fantastic chorus singing is anything to go by, AODS are heading for
another winner next March", With rousing chorus numbers and some inspired silliness, "Pirates"
is sure to build on the success of AODS' last musical production, "Oklahoma!".
Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7.45pm at the Alton Assembly Rooms and performance
dates are from 4th to 7th March 2009. If you would like more details you can contact the
Secretary on 01730 827200 or visit the Society's
